Title: Rooftops And Invitations
Fandom: Grey's Anatomy
Characters/Pairings: Meredith, Alex
Word Count: 748
Rating: PG
Prompt: #45 - Moon for [info]fanfic100
Summary: This is just Meredith's quest to prove that she's not as broken as people think she is.

He’s on his way back downstairs to the locker rooms to change when he runs headlong into Meredith.

“I thought you were going home?” Alex asks, knowing her shift ended at the same time his did. They’d been that way pretty much for the past week, so he was getting used to meeting up with her at some point between the way out and either Joe’s or at home.

“In awhile. I’m not done here yet.” She tells him, seeming far too smiley for someone who presumably has to work overtime.

“Running labs?”

“Not really.”

He’s confused. “Are you going to tell me or do I have to keep guessing?”

“I’m going up to the roof,” she admits, and before he can ask why she gets a bad idea. “Wanna come?”

It’s less of a question, more a simple statement of her intentions, because she nudges him in that direction, leaving him little choice but to follow. “You know I know you’re having a bad couple of weeks but is jumping off the roof really the answer?”

“Shut up,” she barks at him, midstep, coming to the door and turning the handle, leading up to the roof.

“Alright, you’re on the roof. Happy?” He asks, as she comes to a stop towards the end of the landing.

She ignores his question. “Have you ever been up here?”

“Yeah. Fought Yang over a helicopter to go pick up a heart.” He doesn’t say whose heart but she seems to know anyways. “Not exactly the best memory.”

“It’s better at night. When the moon’s out.” It isn’t full but it’s close. He hesitates to look down; heights have always made his head spin a little. “I swear this is the only place in the whole city where you can see the stars.”

He’s never really seen her as a lover of the outdoors. It’s either the hospital or home for all of them and the sun and the moon mean nothing more than how close they are to the end of their shift. But here she seems positively enthralled by her surroundings and he just can’t grasp why.

“Everything looks small from up here.” She explains, almost like she can read his mind, which, at this point, is not entirely surprising. “You can see everything, this whole mess of people and it just...” she turns to him, like she just noticed she’s talking aloud again, instead of thinking, “we don’t seem so dark and twisty anymore you know?”

And that’s what this is about. Meredith’s quest to prove that she’s not as broken as people think she is. As Derek thinks she is. It’s easier to do that on a rooftop at midnight where people look like ants and the only person who can tell you that you’re crazy won’t because that means admitting that they’re both fucked. There isn’t a drink strong enough or a place high enough to get him to do that.

“Do you think we’re doomed?” She asks, really, seriously asks, not for the first time but usually she’s drunk when she does this and if it wasn’t for the fact that she just got out of surgery half an hour ago he’d think she was.

He won’t lie. “Kind of, yeah.”

She nods, shrugs, looks down below again.

He watches her feet, almost waiting for her to step forward. This is a woman who, once upon a not so long time ago, tried to drown herself in her own bathtub. And he may not be her best friend or her soulmate or her anything with a title, but he does care. He hates that he cares but he does it anyway. He cares about them all, right down to O’Malley, because these are his people and she was the only one who ever really stuck by him, even after he cheated on Izzie, and he remembers these things.

One foot lifts, and drops back. She backs away from the very edge, turning to go back to the stairs and he’s convinced that he’s just crazy and tired and making something out of nothing, until her voice breaks through, quieter than it was previously.

“Sometimes it’s nice to pretend we’re not.”

She goes back down the stairs, never noticing that he’s no longer following her, leaving him on that rooftop, just for a moment, the moon and the stars reminding him of a time where he had dreams that extended beyond surgery and one night stands.

You are freaking quick! Jeez! But thank you, I'm thankful for your reviews, and I'm glad you like my style at the moment.

Thanks for reading!

When you said you had a fic for us later, I didn't think it'd be Meredith/Alex! Imagine my excitement. :D I like how this is kind of angsty, but nice, if that makes sense? Similar to the Callie/Mark fic, this one is very true to where the characters are at this point in the show.
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 26th, 2008 09:42 pm (UTC)
Well, it's technically friendshippy, not shippy, but hey it works.

I think you've noticed that I write angst. A lot. Most of my stuff is, be it good or bad. I just think the show is like that a lot now, and maybe that's why.

Anyways, I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

No problem with friendship fics! I love my Meredith and Alex any way I can get them. (plus, I am forever a Izzie/Alex girl, no matter how great he is with Mer...)

I enjoy the angst. I've been reading a lot of Meredith/Derek on fanfic boards and whatnot and I love that they're mostly happy, but... maybe I'm getting a little sick of it? ODing on the happy. I've always been an angsty fanfic fan myself, anyhow. So this is a nice break from all the rainbows and butterflies. :P

Found this through fanfic100, and I really liked it! Great job showing some of Meredith and Alex's 'darkness' without the story reading as too melodramatic. I love the Meredith/Alex dynamic on the show and also applaud you for exploring why their relationship is so interesting without writing them as a 'pairing.' Are all of your Grey's fanfic100 stories tagged? I would like to read more of your work!
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 07:23 pm (UTC)
I write the two of them as a pairing every now and then, but I'm more fond of their friendship and that dynamic.

As for more of my fic for [info]fanfic100, my table is here if you're interested.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

This was amazing to read. I love how you capture the essence of each of the characters you write about. :) I'm looking forward to the next Grey's piece!

Thanks hun! I've been having issues writing GA lately, but feedback is definitely the best encouragement :)

Major love for this piece. I love how you choose to portray Meredith.
I enjoyed reading it.
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 07:25 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Meredith is one of my favorites to write. She's so complicated.

I'm glad you liked this!

I think you really got Alex here, because even though he dosen't like to admit it, he does care for his friends.
Very good fic.
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 07:52 pm (UTC)
Remember in Losing My Religion, when he was talking about "his team"? That's what I was thinking of when I wrote this.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!
Snr. Field Agent Beth[info]ladybeth on March 27th, 2008 10:16 pm (UTC)
Thats what I thought about too. And there have been other parts during the show where he's shown how he has cared for the others. Although George is hard to find.

Loved it. Mer and Alex are so similar. I wish they'd give them more friendship scenes. You portrayed them well!
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 07:53 pm (UTC)
I wish they'd do more with them as well. It annoys me that they've all but given up on them.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

This is really great; I love Meredith and Alex's friendship because in a way, his no BS-attitude with her brings out something more honest in Meredith. And like you've captured at the end, Meredith also has a way of getting him thinking about the stuff he normally tries to ignore.

Meredith's behavior and musings here are perfectly her, dark and twisty and sad but simultaneously hopeful. You remind me of why I could like her, which is hard to do, because usually she and I are not on the best of terms. I wish there was more Meredith and Alex platonic interaction on the show, because I like her a lot more around him.

*hugs*
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 08:43 pm (UTC)
You know, I'll always hate them for dropping the Mer+Alex friendship. That was their only other male-female friendship on the show, aside from George+Izzie, which they killed obviously. I like what they bring out in each other, like you said. They just get each other I think.

A lot of people don't like Meredith. I totally understand that. Oddly I'm not one of those people, I just hate her with Derek. Which is unpopular but whatever. She's fun to write, with the right characters and circumstances.

I'm glad you liked this hun! Thanks for reading! (And I really don't remember that you watched GA. News to me, and Woot!)
Laura: SMILE[info]elise_509 on March 28th, 2008 03:42 am (UTC)
I think I really just hate Meredith with Derek too. So we can be unpopular together. I feel like Derek brings out the worst in her. Because really, what Meredith needs is someone to tell her to get her head out of her ass, pardon the language, and all Derek does is coddle her and indulge her. She doesn't grow up around him, she regresses. I like Meredith a lot when she's with Cristina or Alex or the Chief...(none of those meant romantically. ;) )

I watch a crapload of shows but LOST and SPN are kind of the only ones I regularly post about...I'm always surprising people with what I'm watching and not talking about! lol. ;)

Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 28th, 2008 03:46 pm (UTC)
That is my exact problem with her and Derek. She doesn't learn how to grow up. He treats her as this broken child and it only makes it worse. And I like her with all of the people you mentioned too, although I've been known to write Mer/Alex and Mer/Cristina, even if I don't actively ship either.

I know what you mean. I watch a lot of stuff other than what I mention on here, but a lot of them are guilty pleasures.

4 words 'these are his people' totally take me back to Alex's 'team' speech at the end of season 2. Sounds very true to both the characters mindsets. Great work as always and it's great to see some more Alex/Meredith fics!
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 08:45 pm (UTC)
That's what I was thinking of with this, strangely enough. It is very reminiscent of that speech, and I loved that speech, so I guess that's good.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

Hello! Just popping by to check in with you re: Sweet Charity since I think the deadline is getting close? Anyway, whenever you're done with the story just go ahead and post it and then I'd love it if you would comment on my journal with the link. Or something like that. Hope all is going well! :)
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith[info]slybrunette on March 28th, 2008 03:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, sorry that's been taking so long hun. I've been really sick and dealing with family issues so I haven't been able to get much GA fic done. Just getting back into the swing of things. I'll try and get it out within the week. Sorry for the delay.
rhcastaway: Meredith/Alex[info]rhcastaway on March 28th, 2008 11:16 pm (UTC)
Always nice to see some Merlex, since we'll never get it in the show. These two would be so perfect together... *sigh* damn Shonda and her ridiculousness. You should take over. And make *this* happen... and more, of course... ;)
Stephanie (Amber): Meredith/Alex[info]slybrunette on March 29th, 2008 07:42 pm (UTC)
Shonda has long ago shown that she does not know what she's doing. I give up with her.

I'd love to take over the show, but I need to build a bigger army to do that? Wanna join (lol)

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!
