Title: Take These Roses Off Of Me
Fandom: Lost
Characters/Pairings: Claire, Liam, mentions of Charlie/Claire.
Word Count: 651
Rating: PG
Author's Note: I don't think my heart was in this, but this has been in my head for awhile so I'm posting it.
Summary: AU. A few Google searches tell her there's a memorial being held the following weekend.

She thinks he would’ve been happy with the way he went out. Flowers decorating portraits of him outside of his childhood home, mourners on the news talking about what a horrible loss of talent this was.

Claire sees it all on the computer, hours of footage from the days following September 22, 2004, archived on numerous websites. She watches and reads until she feels like she might vomit from the memories that overtake her.

The second time around, when everything is uncovered and the Oceanic Six are found, the coverage for him lasts less than a day. He’s dead but then again they always thought he was. It’s different for the other six. That’s the real news story. Everything else is too shrouded in secrets and lies for the media to get anything of substance enough to play on or play up.

Even so, a few Google searches tell her there’s a memorial being held the following weekend, specifically for close family and friends, and though she may not have known Charlie in this life she knew him in another. She’d like to think that still counted.

She hangs on the outskirts of the candlelight vigil, makes sure no one really sees her for long enough to realize they don’t recognize her. People speak and reminisce and she listens to the stories of a man she never really knew.

Halfway through the memorial, it starts to rain, heavy enough to put out some of the candles (she notes the irony of it, water snuffing out the candles, snuffing out life) and they all move for shelter. She moves to find her car before someone grabs of hold of her and pulls her under a nearby tent.

As soon as she looks at him she knows exactly who he is and her stomach drops.

“I’m sorry, do I know you?” Liam Pace asks, hair wet from the rain, blue eyes turning dark against the stormy skies.

Claire had thought of a thousand lies and tales to tell about who she was, why she was here, how she knew Charlie. At the moment she was having a hard settling on just one.

He takes care of that for her. “Wait a minute, I’ve seen you before. You were on that plane.”

She backs up; without control of the situation she can’t help but feel like running. “No, you’ve got the wrong person.”

“They ran your picture on the news. They ran all of the – “ her eyes plead with him not to finish that sentence but the words kind of just fall unbidden, “dead.”

He’s already gone and said it and there’s nothing she can do repudiate it. But if this is her only chance to say anything she’s going to make it worthwhile. She digs Charlie’s ring out of her pocket and puts it in Liam’s hand, telling him. “Your brother died a hero. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

They lock eyes for a moment and then she goes to leave when he calls after her, “You’re supposed to be dead. You died in the crash.”

Claire looks away, thinks for a moment, and then tells him, “So they say.”

She can’t risk standing there any longer, or drawing anymore attention to herself than she already has. As he has just pointed out, she’s not even supposed to be alive. She runs through the mud back to her car and guns it out of there.

At a stoplight she cries, really cries, for the first time since Hurley told her Charlie hadn’t made it. She gets it all out, the entire ride back to the hotel, until she can’t cry anymore. And she wakes up the next day and flies out of the country without looking back.

Closure, she thinks, as she watches the land below her disappear, letting go of the man she once thought would always be with her.

God! I want to hug you!! You're making me love so much all the things I hate in current canon, like the future of Jin and Aaron and Claire... please don't ever stop writing. I love this. The moment in which Claire hands the ring to Liam broke my heart into a million pieces. Can I say that I'm utterly in love with you Aaron-less Claire? I love this. It's perfect. It's, as usual, what needed to be written written wonderfully. I love it.
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 21st, 2008 01:15 am (UTC)
Well here's the thing, we assume Jin is dead, even though we haven't seen his body. He may not be. With Claire, the only thing making us think she's dead is that Aaron is with Kate. So she's either a) dead, b) on the island, or c) on the mainland and no one knows. That's a lot of scenarios to play with.

I've done something like this before, with the ring and Liam. I wrote Claire/Liam once, after Season 3, before I knew you. It's a dynamic that I'm slightly fascinated with and would love to see something about it on the show. Even though we probably won't.

Anyways, long story short, I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading and for your support with all my fic hun! I really appreciate it!

Aww that was beautiful. I like how you had that when the Oceanic Six were discovered Charlie was pushed out of the limelight for them. & Claire meeting up with Liam & telling him that Charlie died a hero was awesome
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 21st, 2008 01:17 am (UTC)
I'm assuming the Oceanic Six would definitely take the spotlight when it's found out that some people survived. There isn't necessarily going to be a 'well they're dead...again' with everyone else. But these six will definitely be in the media.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading and reviewing!

*huggles* I love Charlie/Claire. First ship of Lost for me:)

Interesting story too. Wonder what Liam is thinking now.

I noticed a pattern with my Lost fics and your reviews. I tend to get reviews on the C/C or the Boone/Shannon so yeah, I kind of figured :)

I wish they used Liam more than they actually do, but you know, the Lost writers are mildly stupid I think.
Snr. Field Agent Beth[info]ladybeth on March 21st, 2008 11:29 pm (UTC)
I try to read everything, but some I just don't know anything about the characters. So if I don't review, there is a chance I read and kinda got lost due to having no knowledge.

TV writers have been disappointing as of late. Only a few shows have impressed me with the writing and that was Moonlight and Doctor Who. I can only hope that the time off gave them some time to work on that and we will get a spactacular set of shows next year.

Have you ever seen Moonlight. it was a lot better then I expected it to be.
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 22nd, 2008 01:22 am (UTC)
I don't expect you to read the Lost stuff at all so when you do I'm always surprised and always grateful.

I've seen Moonlight, though it never really did much for me. Although I do like their choice in music (that's an odd statement but I watched GA because of that too in the beginning).

Its not that odd of a statement. I always like it when a show uses good use of music.

Moonlight takes a few episodes to get in. But I kinda got hooked on one of the characters and will continue to watch it. I only started to watch it because My grandmother loved it. I figured it was just an Angel wannabe but it actually surprised me. Its written well, uses good musical moments and isn't "Woe is me, the Vampire" so much.

Wonderful. I definitely think Charlie would have appreciated his sending-off. He'd especially like that Claire was there, too. I loved her interaction with Liam and the ring. Well done!
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 21st, 2008 03:01 am (UTC)
Charlie seemed to want fame...a lot. Talking about going platinum and all that. I think he just wanted to be good at something, have someone's admiration.

Glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

Oh, I like this, although their interaction is so brief. And I like the way you're playing with canon here, like you did in your Jin fic. I would love for some of the "dead" to show up in the real world.
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 22nd, 2008 03:37 pm (UTC)
When the show is on I do canon, when it's off I'm totally AU, so the next four weeks are going to be extremely AU.

I so do want that to be a twist, that these people are not exactly dead, that this is a larger coverup than we think.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

I think you have the right attitude: let's not presume anyone is dead before they are actually dead and burried! you did a great job with this, i loved it. claire's sorrow, Liam's confusion... very well done ♥
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 23rd, 2008 04:18 am (UTC)
Unless I see a body I'm not going to believe anyone is dead. I refuse to.

I'm glad you thought it was well done! Thanks for reading!

That broke my heart, in a good way. I love the idea of Claire and Liam interaction, even if it's very brief. Great job! I'm adding this one to my memories.
Stephanie (Amber): Charlie/Claire[info]slybrunette on March 27th, 2008 08:46 pm (UTC)
Well, at least it was in a good way I guess. I always wanted to see some kind of Claire and Liam interaction, because I really like Liam.

I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

This is perfection. I rarely read Charlie/Claire fic or things along those lines, but I'm really glad I read this. I love the moment where Liam grabs her hand and the words they exchange. That's a moment that could so easily be right out of an episode, I could see exactly how it would look on screen.
Stephanie (Amber): My World Comes Crashing Down (Lost)[info]slybrunette on April 11th, 2008 10:43 pm (UTC)
I don't really either -- I never actually shipped them -- but my muse does what it wants.

I hope maybe we see something like this, for closure's sake I think.

Glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!
